Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Faverolles, located in Villentrois-Faverolles-en-Berry, is a monument dating back to the 11th century. The nave and western facade, the oldest parts, preserve architectural traces of the 10th century. These elements bear witness to the long history of the building, marked by major changes over the centuries.
The choir, redone at the end of the 12th century, has a characteristic five-sided bedside, reflecting the stylistic evolutions of the late Romanesque era. In the 15th century, foothills were added around the church to stabilize the structure and allow the vaulting of the nave, a major technical intervention for the time. The bell tower, for its part, was erected later in the seventeenth century, thus complementing the current aspect of the building.
A 16th century well is also mentioned, adding a utility and historical dimension to the site. The church was once a priory dependent on Villeloin Abbey, which underscores its religious and economic importance in the region. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 9 August 1930, it now belongs to the commune and remains a valuable testimony of the medieval and post-medieval local heritage.
