Origin and history

The fanum of Offemont, also known as the Gallo-Roman temple, is a religious building dating from the 1st century, located in the territory of Belfort. Its ruins, discovered in 1895 near the Barracks district (the Balloon or the Martinets), are located along an ancient road leading to a Roman villa. This site illustrates the Gallo-Roman cultural settlement in the region, with a square structure of 4.25 meters side, surrounded by a gallery of 1.95 meters wide.

Archaeological excavations, carried out on several occasions (1896, 1964, 1966-1968, 1970-1978), revealed Gallic artifacts prior to the Roman period, such as leuch gossip or glass bracelets. These discoveries suggest an early occupation of the site, although the remains visible today are mainly from the Gallo-Roman era. The cella of the temple rests on a bowl dug in clay, but little furniture has been exhumed, with the exception of studs, nails and coins.

The fanum was listed as a historic monument on April 15, 1987, recognizing its heritage importance. Owned by the commune of Ofemont, it bears witness to religious practices and Gallo-Roman urban planning in Franche-Comté. Its location, close to a villa and a way, highlights its role in local social and spiritual organization.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a protected monument, although its exact location is considered poor (note 5/10) in terms of cartographic accuracy. The current coordinates place it near 21 bis rue Aristide Briand, in an area marked by ancient heritage.
