Origin and history

The chapel of Boisaugeais, located in Nanteuil-en-Vallée, was originally a priory dependent on the abbey of Notre-Dame de Nanteuil-en-Vallée. Cited in 1469 in a state of income of the abbey, it illustrates the rural religious architecture of the period. Its rectangular plan, reinforced with foothills, and flat bedside reflect a sober but neat construction, typical of small monastic buildings.

The portal, adorned with two third-point rolls and a frieze carved by acrobat characters, bears witness to a late Gothic influence. Inside, nave and choir are vaulted with a broken hanger and decorated with stencil painted motifs (false joints, interlaces, fleurs de lilies), evoking 15th century art. These decorations, partially redone in the seventeenth century (date of 1611 visible), highlight the liturgical and artistic continuity of the place.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1992, the chapel retains an openwork campanile and carved elements on the inner piles. Its painted decor, although restored, remains a rare example of preserved medieval polychromy. Today a communal property, it embodies the rural religious heritage of the Charente, between monastic heritage and later adaptations.

The location, noted as "very satisfactory" (opinion 8/10), and its state of conservation make it a remarkable site. The GPS coordinates and approximate address (5326 Mln de la Tache) confirm its anchoring in the landscape of Nanteuil-en-Vallée, between abbey history and local life.
