Origin and history

Notre-Dame de Thézac Church is a Catholic building located in the department of Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. Originally built in the 12th century, it now retains major elements of this period, such as its bedside, transept, Gothic chapels and bell tower, considered one of the best preserved in the Romanesque Saintong. The nave, destroyed during the wars of religion, illustrates the upheavals that the monument has experienced over the centuries.

The church's ossuary crypt, accessible by a staircase, is covered by a primitive cross-section. A stone bench, located about 50 centimetres from the ground, turns it around, adding to its historical and mysterious character. This basement, typical of medieval religious buildings, was often used to house burials or relics, reflecting the funeral and spiritual practices of the time.

Classified as historical monuments since 11 July 1903, the church of Notre-Dame de Thézac embodies a major architectural and religious heritage of the region. Its bell tower, chapels and crypt offer a tangible testimony of Romanesque and Gothic art in Saintonge, while recalling the conflicts that marked its history, such as the wars of religion that caused the partial destruction of the nave.
