Origin and history
The cross of the Castans washyard is a monumental stone cross, located in the hamlet of La Viale, on the town of Castans (Aude, Occitanie). Dated precisely from 1640 thanks to an engraved inscription, it is distinguished by its patty shape and religious iconography. On its southern face, a Pietà in high relief represents the Virgin Mary holding Christ, with stylistic features typical of the nascent baroque art: rigid draperies, hierarchical proportions between the characters, and a sober treatment of volumes. The base also bears a Christ cross in less marked relief, as well as the initials IHS, Christic symbol common at the time.
The cross was included in the inventory of historical monuments by decree of 13 April 1948, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. Its original location, near a washhouse, suggests a role both religious and community, probably marking a place of assembly or procession for the inhabitants of the hamlet. The date of 1640 coincides with a period of reconstruction and Catholic affirmation in Languedoc, after the unrest of the wars of Religion. The sober style and the local invoice of the sculpture indicate a realization by regional artisans, rather than by a major workshop.
Today owned by the municipality of Castans, the cross is still located in its historical location, although its precise location (12 Laviale) is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10 depending on the sources). No information is available on its current state of conservation or on any restorations. The sources mention only its inscription in the title of historical monuments and its representation in the Mérimée base, without details of its contemporary use or its accessibility to the public.
