Origin and history
The Lavoir de Laneuville-sur-Meuse is an 18th-century historical monument located in the department of Meuse in the Grand Est region. This type of building, often built near water points or central squares, played an essential role in the daily life of villages, serving as a place of laundry and sociability for the inhabitants. Its place of the Church (or place of the Fontaine according to the sources) reflects its integration into the heart of the village, where collective activities were concentrated.
The washhouses, which appeared massively between the 17th and 19th centuries, were public infrastructure designed to improve hygiene conditions and facilitate the work of lavender plants. In rural areas such as Lorraine, where agriculture and small local industries dominated, these common spaces reduced the burden of domestic work. The Lavoir de Laneuville-sur-Meuse, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1981, illustrates this architectural and social tradition, today preserved as a communal heritage.
Its status as municipal property underscores its past and present importance for local memory.
