Origin and history

The church Saint-Léger de Thenissey, located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 12th century. His choir, covered with broken vaults, bears witness to this medieval period. The nave, on the other hand, is covered with a chevron frame dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, illustrating the architectural evolutions of the period.

In the 16th century, the interior of the church was embellished by painted decorations, recently rediscovered. These frescoes depict scenes of martyrdom and saints, offering a glimpse of Renaissance religious art. The facade, which was rebuilt in the 18th century, shows a subsequent transformation of the building, adapted to the aesthetic tastes of this period.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 17 March 1999, the church now belongs to Thenissey municipality. Its architecture thus blends medieval, reborn and classical elements, reflecting the different periods of its construction and renovations. Recent work has helped to highlight its artistic heritage, including 16th century murals.
