The dovecote, in full (Box B 295): inscription by order of 17 February 2003

Origin and history

The Pigeonier de Marcy is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Marcy, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 17th century, this octagonal dovecote is distinguished by its brick and stone structure, as well as its broken height. It represents a rare example of this type of architecture in this part of the department, testifying to agricultural and seigneurial practices of the time.

The pigeon house was listed as a historic monument by order of 17 February 2003, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its precise location at 3 rue du Château in Marcy is documented in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, etc.), its state of conservation and registration make it a significant part of the local heritage.

The dovecotes, like Marcy's, played an important economic and social role in the 17th century. Reserved for lords or landowners, they symbolized a seigneurial right and were used to rear pigeons, a source of meat and fertilizer for agricultural land. In Hauts-de-France, a region marked by strong agricultural activity, these constructions also reflected social hierarchies and local construction techniques, combining brick and stone.

The available data, from Wikipedia, Monumentum and official databases, underline the architectural importance of this dovecote, while noting a location accuracy deemed "satisfactory" (level 7/10). No information is provided on any historical figures related to its construction or use or on specific events taking place there.
