Origin and history
Bancourel is a circular building built in the 18th century on the territory of the commune of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie in the Lot department. This monument, remains of the agricultural occupation of Causse, is already mentioned as "damaged" in 1788 in archives of the Cayla family, then owner. It could have been acquired by Louis Cayla, an affluent marshal of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, although this hypothesis is not confirmed with certainty.
The dovecote was listed as historic monuments on 11 August 2010, recognizing its heritage value. A restoration was carried out in 2012 to preserve this architectural and historical testimony. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a medieval village ranked among the most beautiful in France, and is part of a landscape marked by the rural and seigneurial history of the region.
This type of construction, typical of the agricultural areas of Quercy, was used to rear pigeons, an important food and economic resource for local lords and peasants. Pigeons were often associated with estates or farms, symbolizing both social status and practical activity. Their presence reflects the agro-pastoral organization of causses, where livestock and crops coexisted in a fragile balance.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance as an element of local heritage. The Bancourel Pigeon is thus a marker of the rural history of Occitanie, illustrating the agricultural practices and social dynamics of the eighteenth century in this region.
