Origin and history
The Dome Tower, also called belfry, is an iconic monument located in the town of Wassy, Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Although its name evokes Cirfontaines-en-Azois, the sources confirm its establishment in Wassy. Built in 1748 as a clock tower, it symbolizes 18th century civil architecture, with a function both practical (time measurement) and symbolic (community power).
In 1773, an imperial roof topped by a campanile was added, reinforcing its monumental character. The same period saw the erection of a Notre-Dame gate in 1775, later destroyed in 1890. These changes reflect the urban and religious developments of the period. The tower was officially listed as historic monuments on 13 March 1933, recognizing its heritage value.
Today, the ground floor of the belfry houses the Tourist Office, illustrating its adaptive reuse. The tower remains the property of the town of Wassy, showing its local anchoring. Its architecture, marked by the classical style and the additions of the eighteenth century, makes it a remarkable example of the belfries of eastern France, often linked to the affirmation of communal freedoms.
Sources also indicate average geographic accuracy (level 6/10), with an approximate address at 7 Rue Notre-Dame in Wassy. Its state of conservation and accessibility (visits, rental) are not detailed in the documents available, but its status as a historical monument guarantees legal protection.
