Origin and history
The Hotel de Varey is a private hotel located in Lyon, built during the 4th quarter of the 18th century. This monument illustrates the Lyon civil architecture of the end of the Old Regime, a period marked by the rise of urban residences for the aristocracy and the rising bourgeoisie. Its location, between Auguste-Comte Street and Place Bellecour, makes it a witness to the pre-revolutionary Lyon urban planning.
The Hotel de Varey is listed as a Historic Monument and is distinguished by its protected elements: facades and roofs, a wrought iron staircase with its cage, as well as a large living room on the ground floor decorated with period décor. These features reflect the refinement of Lyon bourgeois interiors, where local crafts (ferronry, stuccos) played a central role. The registration by order of 21 December 1984 underlines its heritage value.
The location of the hotel, close to Place Bellecour — the historic and commercial heart of Lyon — suggests its integration into a prestigious neighbourhood. At that time Lyon was a major economic hub, especially for silk, and private hotels served both as a residence and as a place of social representation. The absence of sources detailing its owners or its exact function, however, limits the accuracy of its history.
