Origin and history

The sand polishers of the Pierre à l'eau form a set of three megaliths located in the Land Forest of Lancy, on the territory of the municipality of Lailly, in the department of Yonne. These stone blocks, a few tens of meters away, have grooves typical of prehistoric polishers, used to sharpen or polish stone tools. Their disposition and state of conservation make it a rare example of Neolithic craftsmanship in the region.

Two of the three polishers were classified as historical monuments by order of 30 May 1922, thereby recognizing their heritage value. This ranking is part of a desire to preserve the megalithic sites of the Yonne, a region rich in prehistoric remains. Their location in the state forest, although making access less easy, has contributed to their relative conservation, to the shelter of destruction associated with urbanization or agriculture.

No specific information is available on any archaeological excavations or specific tools discovered on site. However, their presence attests to human occupation and craft activities in this area during prehistoric times. These polishers integrate into a wider network of Burgundian megalithic sites, reflecting regionally shared cultural and technical practices.
