Stone crossing: inscription by decree of 6 May 1939

Origin and history

The cross of intersection of Vaudes is a historical monument located in the commune of Vaudes, in the department of Aube, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, this stone cross is a typical example of the intersection crosses erected at that time, often for religious or commemorative purposes. It marks a meeting point or symbolic place in the rural landscape of the time.

In the 16th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region (now part of the Great East) was marked by a rural society organized around agriculture, local fairs and religious practices. Crosses often served as landmarks for travellers, places of prayer or commemoration of local events. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in everyday life, as well as the role of village communities in maintaining these symbols.

These monuments were usually built of stone, a durable material that allowed their conservation throughout the centuries.
