Origin and history

The rock engravings of Aussois are a listed historical monument, located in the municipality of Aussois, Savoie. These engravings, mainly dated from the Protohistory, constitute a collection of artistic and symbolic works made on rocks or natural walls. Their presence attests to the ancient human occupation in this Alpine region and to cultural practices related to this period.

All engravings were officially protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 22 November 1999. This classification covers several cadastral parcels, indicating a dispersion of works over a relatively wide territory. The precise location of these engravings is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory", according to the criteria of the Merimée database, although adjustments may be necessary for an accurate identification.

These rock engravings are part of a wider protohistoric context, where engraved representations often serve ritual, symbolic or narrative purposes. Their study provides a better understanding of the lifestyles, beliefs and artistic techniques of the people of the time. The property of these engravings is now owned by the municipality of Aussois, which facilitates their preservation and heritage development.
