16th century road cross located at the entrance of the old village: inscription by decree of 12 May 1927

Origin and history

The road cross of Malemort-sur-Corrèze is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth century, located in the commune of Malemort-sur-Corrèze, in Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). It is precisely at the entrance of the old town, on the street of the Republic. This type of cross, typical of the French rural heritage, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 12 May 1927, this cross is today the property of the municipality. Its inscription in the Mérimée base underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note of 5/10). The road crosses, like this one, were usually erected to mark places of assembly, crossroads or village entrances, reflecting the piety and social organization of the rural communities of the time.

The Limousin region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, was in the Renaissance a land of agriculture and crafts, where religious monuments played a central role in everyday life. These crosses also served as a landmark for pilgrims or merchants, in a context where travel was often difficult and landscapes were not urbanized. Their preservation demonstrates the commitment of local people to their history and heritage.
