Origin and history
The Allée Billery de Sassenage fountain is a historic monument located in the municipality of Sassenage, Isère (Department 38), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 19th century, it was listed as a historical monument by ministerial decree on 10 June 1943. This protection specifically concerns the fountain element, stressing its heritage importance for the commune and the region.
The fountain is located in Billery driveway, although GPS sources suggest an approximate address at 4 Bis Rue de la République. Owned by the municipality of Sassenage, it is identified in the Merimée database under the code Insee 38474. Its location is considered "fair" (note 5/10), indicating a geographical accuracy to be improved.
The public fountains of the 19th century played a central role in the French communes, providing a point of access to drinking water for residents and animals. In Sassenage, as in other cities in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, these works also reflected the technical progress of the period and the hygienist concerns. Their preservation today demonstrates the commitment of communities to their common heritage.
