Belfry (old), with its wrought iron coronation: inscription by order of 4 October 1941

Origin and history

The belfry of Besse-sur-Issole is an emblematic monument of this Varoese municipality, characterized by its hybrid structure: a first level of stone topped by a ironware campanile. The date of 1655, engraved on its southern façade and on the campanile, attests to its construction in the middle of the seventeenth century. This type of architecture reflects the mixed techniques used at the time, combining robustness and craft elegance.

A second date, 1834, visible on the building, marks a phase of partial restoration or reconstruction, suggesting work to preserve or modernize the structure. The belfry, with its wrought iron crowning, was entered in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 4 October 1941. This official protection underlines its heritage and architectural importance for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

Owned by the municipality of Besse-sur-Issole, this belfry illustrates the central role of bell towers and campaniles in Provencal villages: they rhythmized daily life (hours of prayer, alerts) and symbolized local authority. Their presence also marked the geographical and social centre of the villages, often located near churches or public squares. Today, there remains a testimony of the craftsmanship of the past, between masonry and metalwork.
