Origin and history
The cross at the crossroads of Châtillon-sur-Saône is a monumental stone cross erected in the seventeenth century. It consists of a masonry pedestal, an ionic capital column and a carved cross. The pedestal bears an inscription dedicated to Monsieur Garnier, priest of the place, dated 1809, as well as the Latin formula "O CRUX AVE". The sculptures include Christ surrounded by Saint Nicholas and Saint Sulpicus, the symbols of the four Evangelists, and a Virgin of Piety on the reverse, accompanied by saints and angels carrying the instruments of the Passion.
The cross is located at the crossroads of the Grande Rue and the road of Enfonvelle, at the exit of the village towards Fresnes-sur-Apance. It is part of a collection of monumental crosses present in the commune, such as the Bacchane cross or the Saint Sulpice cross. Its strategic, high location makes it a visual and spiritual landmark for residents and travellers.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 14 June 1909, this cross bears witness to the local devotion and religious art of the 17th and 19th centuries. Its rich iconography, mixing holy patrons and evangelical symbols, reflects the importance of Christian faith in the daily life of the region. Garnier's mention suggests a restoration or subsequent consecration, marking its anchor in community history.
The Vosges department, where Châtillon-sur-Saône is located, is known for its varied religious heritage, including crossroads, calvaries and churches. These monuments often served as gathering points, prayer or protection against dangers, in a rural society where religion rhythmized life cycles. The cross of Châtillon-sur-Saône thus embodies both an artistic heritage and a collective memory.
Available sources, such as the Merimée and Wikipedia, confirm its status as communal property and its ranking among the historical monuments of the Vosges. Its precise location, 74 Grande Rue, and its Insee code (88096) allow it to accurately situate it in the heritage landscape of the Great East, an area marked by a rich religious and architectural past.
