Origin and history
The monument to Admiral Gaspard de Coligny is a sculptural work located at Place Coligny in Châtillon-Coligny, Loiret. Made at the end of the 19th century, it consists of a bronze bust representing the admiral in historic civilian clothing, not in armor as often imagined. This choice reflects the municipality's desire to honour the representative of the powerful family of the Châtillon, rather than the Protestant military leader. The monument was designed to anchor local history in public space, while avoiding warrior symbols.
The original plaster bust, exhibited at the Salon de 1878, was acquired by the Ministry of Fine Arts for the commune of Châtillon-Coligny. The bronze version, ordered directly from the Thiébaut Frères foundry, bears the signature of the sculptor Jeanne de Beaumont (known as Beaumont-Castries). This monument, fully protected by a registration order in 2025, illustrates the importance of public orders in preserving the local heritage. Its base and its location on the central square underline its memory and identity role for the city.
Unlike the traditional representations of Coligny in armor, this monument favours a civil image, perhaps to calm the religious tensions still sensitive in the 19th century. The Thiebaut Frères foundry, renowned for its bronze works, has marked the basis of the base, attesting to the technical quality of the work. Owned by the municipality, the monument remains accessible to the public, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10).
