Origin and history
The Menhir du Villionnec is a megalithic monument located in the municipality of Belz, Morbihan, Brittany. Daed of Neolithic, it illustrates the typical constructions of this period, marked by the erection of stones erected for probably ritual or commemorative purposes. This menhir, like many others in Brittany, reflects the importance of the sacred landscapes and collective practices of prehistoric societies.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 24 July 2023, the menhir du Villionnec is protected within a 10-metre perimeter around its base, including the surrounding ground. This legal protection underscores its heritage and archaeological value. The site is referred to the Belz cadastre (section E, plots 547, 559 and 561) and its approximate location is indicated on the 63 Route des Champs. The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), which may reflect the mapping challenges of older sites.
Menhirs, such as the Villionnec, were often associated with funeral, astronomical or territorial practices during the Neolithic period. In Brittany, a region rich in megalithic remains, these monuments marked gathering places or landmarks in a landscape being transformed by the first agricultural communities. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the beliefs and social organization of these missing societies.
