17th century cross: by decree of 27 September 1932

Origin and history

La Croix de Villers, located in the municipality of Villers (code Insee 88507) in the Vosges, is a 17th century religious monument. It is classified as a Historic Monument by order of 27 September 1932, which underscores its heritage importance. Its location, at 85 Rue de l'Église, is estimated with an accuracy considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), although GPS coordinates do not allow a perfect identification.

This type of cross, typical of the Lorrain villages, often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for local communities. In the 17th century, the Vosges, then integrated into the Duchy of Lorraine, had a rural life marked by agriculture, crafts and a strong influence of the Catholic Church. The cross of paths or crossroads, such as Villers, played a symbolic role in daily life, marking places of prayer or parish boundaries.

The Croix de Villers is now owned by the municipality. Its classification in 1932 reflects the desire to preserve this heritage, while rural religious monuments were sometimes threatened by urbanization or abandonment. No information is available about its sponsor, its detailed iconography or possible post-construction restorations.
