Facade and roof: inscription by decree of 16 December 1949

Key figures

Bertrand du Pouget (ou Bertrand de Poget) - Cardinal and Bishop of Ostia Owner and founder of the collegiate church.

Origin and history

The house of Cardinal Roquemaure, located in the commune of Roquemaure in Occitanie, is an emblematic building of the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its architecture divided into two parts: a primitive section to the right and a posterior extension to the left, inspired by the first. The façade, partially redesigned on the ground floor, features windows with cross-sections and sills on the floors, reinforced by a vertical pile. A polygonal staircase tower, located on the right, serves the upper levels. This monument, inscribed in historical monuments in 1949, illustrates the southern Renaissance style with more pronounced mouldings in its oldest part.

The house owes its name to Bertrand du Pouget (or Bertrand de Poget), cardinal and bishop of Ostie, who made it his residence. This prelate, also founder of the Roquemaure collegiate church, marked local history by his religious and political influence. The building, with its facade and roof protected since 1949, bears witness to the architectural heritage associated with the ecclesiastical dignitaries of the region during the Renaissance. Its state of conservation and its stylistic characteristics make it a notable example of the noble Provencal habitat of this time.

Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, indicate that the house is located on 4 rue de la République, in the Gard department. Its inscription as a historic monument specifically concerns the facade and roof, highlighting their heritage value. Although details of its current use (visits, rental) are not explicitly documented, its protected status makes it a place of interest for the study of 16th century religious civil architecture in Languedoc.
