Hospital (ruins of the old) in the hamlet of the Hospitalet (cad. AR 117, 178): inscription by order of 3 May 1974
Origin and history
The hospital of the Hospitalet of Rocamadour, dated the 13th century, was a medieval establishment dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Located north of the present church, it was used to isolate and observe pilgrims suspected of contagious diseases before they entered the city. The remains still visible today, such as the collapsed walls and a full three-way gate, mark the location of this former hospital, some of which was also linked to the adjacent cemetery.
This hospital was part of a broader context of managing the flow of pilgrims in Rocamadour, a major site of devotion in the Middle Ages. The ruins, protected since 1974, recall the health practices of the time, where preventive quarantine was a common measure to limit the spread of epidemics. The building, now owned by the commune, illustrates the importance of hospital infrastructure in places of pilgrimage, combining reception and rudimentary medical precautions.
The available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, precisely locate the hospital in the hamlet of the Hospitalet in Rocamadour (Lot, Occitanie). Although partially in ruins, the site retains a recognized heritage value, as evidenced by its listing as Historic Monuments. Its portal, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, and residual walls offer a tangible overview of its original spatial organization.
