Origin and history

The Collège Notre-Dame de Roscudon, located at Pont-Croix in the Finistère, is a Gothic building built in stages between the 13th and 16th centuries, under the impulse of the lords of Pont-Croix and then of the family of Rosmadec. Originally a castral chapel, it became a symbol of Breton aristocratic patronage, mixing English influences (including Cornwall) and local reinterpretations of the Romanesque style. Its complex plan, with a three-vessel nave, a revamped transept and a cut-up bedside, reflects these successive additions. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1851, it houses remarkable elements such as a southern porch decorated with Gothic netillas, a 67-metre arrow inspired by the cathedral of Quimper, and stained glass windows from the 15th to 16th centuries.

The southern porch, built around 1420, illustrates the climax of the flamboyant Breton style with its blind gables decorated with roses and specks, while the bell tower (circa 1450) bears witness to the links between John II of Rosmadec and Bishop Bertrand de Quimper, his great uncle. The bedside, rebuilt in the 16th century by Alain II de Rosmadec, adopts a model with sharp gables then in vogue, although less slender than at Notre-Dame de Confort. The restorations of the 19th to 20th centuries (especially after the 1987 storm) preserved its panelling, carved sandstones and retables, including one dedicated to the Last Supper.

The church embodies the Pont-Croix school, a Breton architectural current from the 13th to the 15th century characterized by fascicated supports, cubic capitals and arched vaults, inspired by both Cistercian monasteries and English churches. Its history also reflects the social evolution of the region: first seigneurial chapel, it becomes a truce (parochial dependence) before being wrongly qualified as collegiate by 19th century scholars. The stained glass windows, like those of the Childhood of Christ (circa 1540), and baroque altarpieces underline its central role in local devotion, between medieval heritage and modern enrichments.
