Origin and history
The Saint-Saturnin church, located in the eponymous village of the Cézallier Mountains (Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a Catholic building marked by three major construction periods: the polygonal choir and the transept date back to the 12th century, testifying to the Romanesque art auvergnat with its apsidioles and carved capitals. The nave, the south porch and a side chapel were added in the 15th century, introducing Gothic elements such as the dogive vaults of the porch, decorated with modillons depicting fantastic creatures.
In the 19th century, the church was completed by two northern chapels, a bell tower and its stair turret, partially modernizing the medieval structure. The square of the transept, covered with a cupola on trunks, opens on vaulted crumbs in a broken cradle, while the choir, with five strands, retains a vault in a cul-de-four worn by adorned columns with capitals. These architectural features reflect the evolution of liturgical styles and needs over nearly eight centuries.
Prior to the Revolution, Saint-Saturnin had a seigneurial justice depending on the Auvergne senate floor, emphasizing the central role of the church in the local social and judicial organization. Ranked a historic monument in 1968, it now embodies a preserved religious and artistic heritage, accessible to the public. Its exterior porch, with its arch key engraved with the monogram of Christ, and its carved modillons (sirens, monsters) attest to a remarkable craftsmanship.
The location of the building, in the centre of the village, strengthens its anchor in community life, from its medieval origin to its contemporary use. The stained glass, although mentioned, is not detailed in the sources, but its presence suggests further aesthetic enrichment. The church remains the property of the municipality, guaranteeing its conservation and its openness to visitors.
