Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Requeil, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, is a religious building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 11th century. It has undergone major changes in the 12th, 13th, 16th and 19th centuries, reflecting almost eight centuries of architectural history. Its rectangular flat bedside plan and Romanesque portal, registered since 1926, bear witness to its medieval heritage. The successive enlargements, such as the northern bell tower, the southern collateral and a 16th century chapel, illustrate its evolution over the years.
The church houses remarkable furniture, including a 17th century carved ivory tablet, classified in 1908 as The Baptism of Christ, and a 13th century wooden statue, Virgin with the Child, classified in 1907. These works highlight the artistic and spiritual importance of the place. The entire building, including its 19th-century North Chapel with preserved painted decorations, was listed as a historic monument in 2012, consolidating its heritage protection.
Owned by the municipality of Requeil, the church is part of the religious and architectural landscape of the Sarthe. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments, as well as that of its Romanesque portal in 1926, attest to its historical value. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its central role in local heritage, while providing details on its precise location, address (2 B Rue Pasteur), and its Insee code (72252).
