Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin-le-Vieux is a Romanesque building located in the commune of Casteil, in the heart of the Pyrénées-Orientales. This religious monument, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, has had a history marked by abandonment and rebirth. After being abandoned in the 18th century, the church gradually deteriorated, becoming a ruin over the decades.
The reconstruction of the building took place between 1978 and 1979, giving this local heritage a second life. This restoration project demonstrates the importance attached to the preservation of historic monuments in the region. The church is part of a rich cultural landscape, where Romanesque churches, like this one, reflect the medieval and religious history of Roussillon.
Available sources, including Géraldine Mallet's work in the forgotten Romanesque Churches of Roussillon (2003), highlight the role of these buildings in the local architectural heritage. Although little documented before its restoration, Saint-Martin-le-Vieux illustrates the persistence of Romanesque traditions in the Pyrénées-Orientales, despite the vicissitudes of time.
