Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Bouillac, located in the Aveyron department in Occitanie, was built in the 12th century by the hermits of Conques. Originally a priory, his pure Romanesque choir was an architectural testimony of that time. The sanctuary is located on the left bank of the Lot, a strategic location on the road to Santiago de Compostela, reflecting its historical and spiritual importance.
In the 13th century, the nave and the lateral chapels were redesigned in a sober Gothic style, still influenced by the novel. The square bell tower, rebuilt later, retains primitive seats. The church houses Romanesque capitals decorated with various motifs, such as palmettes, interlaces or birds drinking in a vase. Three bells, including a fondue in Lyon in 1859 and two in Villefranche-de-Rouergue, add to its acoustic and heritage charm.
The building underwent several phases of restoration, notably between 1860 and 1885, then in the 1990s under the direction of the Bâtiments de France. His choir, classified by the Fine Arts, was rehabilitated and inaugurated in 1994. The church, registered with historical monuments since 1944, has also revealed sarcophagi attesting to its seniority. Its history is also marked by practical adaptations, such as the demand of the inhabitants in the seventeenth century to build a church more accessible because of the dangers associated with crossing the Lot.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, work was carried out to modernize and maintain the building, such as the installation of electricity in 1921 or the repair of roofs in 1923. The parish and the commune played an active role in its preservation, illustrating the local attachment to this heritage. Today, Saint Martin Church remains a religious and historical symbol for Bouillac and its surroundings.
