Origin and history

The Saint-Thomas-de-Cantorbéry church of Lagarde-Viaur, located in Montirat, Occitanie, is a historical monument whose present appearance dates mainly from the 15th century. It embodies the past tensions of the region, having served as a place of refuge and surveillance for the local community, especially at the strategic entrance of the gorges of the Viaur. Its fortified architecture reflects its defensive role during the conflicts that marked this area.

A reconstruction campaign between 1661 and 1676, attested by a arch key dated, partially altered the structure. At the beginning of the 19th century, the artist Jacques Bosia, an Albigeian painter of Italian origin, decorated the whole nave, adding an artistic dimension to this building marked by history. The church, protected since 2008, remains a testimony of the successive adaptations related to the military, religious and cultural needs of the population.

Classified as a communal property, this church also illustrates the evolution of local artistic practices. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments in 2008 highlights its heritage importance, mixing medieval heritage, Baroque reconstructions and neoclassical beautifications. The approximate location and available sources (such as Monumentum) confirm its anchoring in the historical landscape of the Tarn, between Albi and the Viaur valleys.
