Origin and history

The Hugues de Payns Museum is located in the native village of the founder of the Order of the Temple, Hugues de Payns, born around 1070. This place commemorates its heritage and that of the Templars, whose first Western command was established in Payns, near Troyes. The historical context is that of the crusades, launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II.

In 1119 Hugues de Payns organized a militia to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land, before officially founding the Order of the Temple in 1129 at the Council of Troyes. The village of Payns, located 12 km from Troyes, was the cradle of this adventure. The estate, transmitted by the Counts of Champagne, became a symbol of Templar power in the West.

Medieval charters already mention the place under various graphs, reflecting its importance. Hugues de Payns, after leading the order for nearly twenty years, died in 1136 in the Holy Land. Its present museum traces this epic, exposing artifacts, reproductions of charters and elements related to the life of the Templars in Champagne.

Today, the museum is part of an effort to enhance the local medieval heritage. It offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as educational activities to raise public awareness of the history of crusades and military-religious orders. The Grand Est region, rich in Templar remains, offers an ideal setting for this museum.

Close to Troyes, the former Comtal capital, Payns attracts medieval history enthusiasts and researchers specialized in the order of the Temple. The museum works with historians and local associations to deepen knowledge of Payns Hugues. Conferences and publications complement its cultural offer, strengthening its role in preserving this unique heritage.

Finally, the site participates in national heritage networks, such as those dedicated to Templar Commanderies. It enjoys growing recognition, notably through partnerships with institutions such as the Departmental Archives of the Dawn.
