Origin and history
Souilly is a medieval monument located in the commune of Souilly, in the department of Meuse (55), in the region of Grand Est. This type of structure, characteristic of the Middle Ages, generally served as a defence point or seigneurial residence. The castral mots were often surrounded by ditches and surmounted by a wooden or stone tower, playing a key role in the local feudal organization.
In medieval times, the Lorraine region, like other rural territories, was marked by an agrarian society and feudal organization. The castral mots, such as that of Souilly, served as power centres for the local lords, ensuring the protection of the populations and control of the surrounding lands. Their presence also reflected the political and military tensions of the time, where fortifications were essential to guard against conflicts or raids.
Souilly's moth, now classified, offers a material testimony of this pivotal period of French history.
