Origin and history
The Protohistoric Camp of Suguensou is a monument located in the town of Esquibian, near Audierne, in Finistère. This site, dated from the Protohistory, has been listed as a Historic Monument since May 27, 1970. It is now owned by the department and consists of several cadastral plots (B 816p, 818, 820p, 829p, 830p).
The location of the camp is estimated with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 7/10), based on available data. Although the practical information about his visit or access is not detailed, his classification shows his heritage importance. The site is associated with the protohistoric period, marked in Brittany by organized human occupations and defensive or community structures.
The Protohistory in Brittany corresponds to a period of transition between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, where local societies develop fortified habitats, often located on heights for strategic reasons. These camps, such as the Suguensou camp, could serve as refuges, territorial checkpoints or collective activity centres. Their study provides a better understanding of the social organization and lifestyles of the people of the time.
