Origin and history

Mornay Chapel is a religious building located in the commune of Nurieux-Volognat, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built mainly in the 12th century, it has a unique nave ending with a cul-de-four apse, arched in the middle of a hanger. Its Romanesque architecture is marked by a lauze roof and ancient coatings, characteristic of the local buildings of this period. A wall painting, probably representing Christ in majesty surrounded by the four evangelists, adorns the apse, although its condition requires restoration.

The chapel was classified as historic monuments by order of 21 December 1982, including also wall painting and an annex building located to the south. The bell tower seems to have been redone in the 20th century, although most of the building dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. Inside, there is a wooden floor as well as two 18th-century golden wooden statues representing the Virgin and Saint Peter, adding to the heritage wealth of the place.

The chapel belongs to the commune of Nurieux-Volognat and is mentioned in heritage databases such as Mérimée. Its specific address is indicated as 5008 Mornay, 01460 Nurieux-Volognat. The location is considered satisfactory, with an estimated accuracy of 8/10. This monument illustrates the importance of religious heritage in the Bugey region, where Romanesque churches have played a central role in local history and community life since the Middle Ages.
