Origin and history

Le pigeonnier de Montplaisir is an emblematic building located in Ambres, Tarn department, Occitanie region. Built in 1891, it is distinguished by its ostentatious architecture, with three floors, and its association with a mansion built around 1870. This monument, which has been listed in the Historic Monuments since 2010, bears the initials "S.R." and its date of construction on a cartridge, although no detailed historical documentation is available about it.

The tower, conceived as a symbol of prestige, illustrates the importance of pigeons in the bourgeois properties of the 19th century. These buildings, often linked to mansions, served not only as a utility for pigeon breeding, but also as a social marker, reflecting the wealth and status of their owners. In Ambres, as in other rural areas of Occitania, these buildings bear witness to the agricultural and architectural transformations of the period.

The Montplaisir pigeon-house was officially recognized for its heritage value by an order of 11 August 2010, which entered it in the inventory of historic monuments.
