Origin and history

The Musée d'art sacré du Monêtier-les-Bains is a space dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of local religious heritage. Located in the former chapel of Saint-Pierre des penitents, it opened in 1997. This museum gathers liturgical works and objects from the 30 chapels and churches of the municipality, illustrating the richness of the religious art of Briançonnais. Access is free, encouraging the discovery of this heritage by a wide public.

The museum's collections cover a period from the 15th to the 17th century, reflecting the evolution of artistic and religious practices in this Alpine region. Exhibits, whether sculptures, paintings or objects of worship, bear witness to the devotion and history of local communities. The old chapel of the penitents, which houses the museum, adds a historical dimension to the site, as an emblematic building of the village.

This museum is part of a wider context of valuing the heritage of the Hautes-Alpes, a region marked by a strong cultural and religious identity. The works presented offer an overview of the artistic and spiritual traditions that have shaped Briançonnais over the centuries. The absence of entry fees reinforces its educational and cultural role with visitors and residents.
