Stone justice station at the end of the 15s, coming from the old road from Clermont to Riom: classification by order of 20 November 1920
Origin and history
Montferrand's judicial pillar, located in Clermont-Ferrand, is a historical monument dating from the second half of the 15th century. Made of lava stone, it takes a rectangular shape and carries a shield with royal arms, composed of three fleurs de lilies arranged two in chief and one in point, surmounted by a crown. This symbol materializes the territorial boundary where royal justice was exercised at Montferrand, then separate town of Clermont before their subsequent merger.
The terminal was initially placed on the old road between Clermont and Riom, a strategic axis in medieval Auvergne. Its classification as a historic monument by decree of 20 November 1920 underlines its heritage importance. Today, it is located at 19 rue de la Rodade, in Puy-de-Dôme, and belongs to the municipality of Clermont-Ferrand. Its state of conservation and its approximate location (noted 5/10 precisely) make it a rare vestige of the judicial administration of the Ancien Régime.
The pillars of justice, such as that of Montferrand, played a key role in the territorial organization of royal power. They delineated the areas where the king's laws and jurisdictions were applied, distinct from the local lords. In Auvergne, a region marked by conflicts of sovereignty between the Counts and the Crown, these markers symbolized central authority. Their presence also reflected the growing urbanization and the need to clarify judicial competence in changing spaces, such as Montferrand, a fortified and commercial city in the late Middle Ages.
