Stone cemetery cross: by order of 11 February 1908

Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Montfermy is a listed historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Dated precisely from 1526, it is distinguished by its completeness, a rare case for this type of work. The cross, carved in stone, presents on one side Christ on the cross and on the other side the Virgin with the Child. These religious representations are typical of late medieval funeral art, mixing devotion and symbolism.

The pedestal of the cross is decorated with attributes on each of its faces, while the arms of the cross incorporate foliage motifs, testifying to a neat craftsmanship. Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 11 February 1908, this cross belongs to the commune of Montfermy. Its state of conservation and its location in the village (5088 Le Bourg) make it a remarkable heritage element, although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10).

This type of cemetery cross played a central role in villages in the 16th century, marking the sacred space of the cemetery and serving as a reference point for collective processions and prayers. In Auvergne, a region marked by a strong Christian tradition and a developed stone craftsmanship, these monuments reflected both local piety and the social status of sponsors, often village communities or local lords. Their presence also strengthened cohesion around places of worship and funeral rites.
