Origin and history
The Hotel des Sibylles, located in Châtellerault, is a monument whose existence has been attested since the 15th century. In the 19th century, he underwent extensive construction and redevelopment, combining architectural elements of the Renaissance with subsequent additions. The building consists of a main body, two wings in return, and a 16th century tower, with a facade richly decorated with sculptures.
The facades overlooking the garden feature a sculpted Renaissance decor, with flat pilasters, circles, diamond trees and adorned capitals. Sculpted heads representing sybils, prophets and warriors animate the ground bands. The western tower takes on the same decor, while the south wing was transformed in the 19th century, illustrating the architectural evolution of the monument.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1995, the Hotel des Sibylles protects its carved facades, roofs and stair tower. These elements demonstrate its heritage importance, combining Renaissance heritage and 19th century adaptations. The site, located Boulevard de Blossac, remains a remarkable example of Châtellerault's civil architecture.
