Origin and history
The noble house of Luxurguey is a manor house located about 6 km southwest of the district of Lot-et-Garonne, New Aquitaine. This monument illustrates the traditional architecture of the Landes, with a 17th century square house flanked by four towers (two round and two square), designed to provide protection in an area that was then marked by disturbances. Its plan follows the codes of the Landes houses: few openings to the west to guard against prevailing winds, a central corridor serving six rooms, and a wooden staircase leading to the first floor. The structure of the large hall evokes a ship hull overturned, a remarkable feature.
In the 19th century, the manor house underwent notable changes, notably on its west façade, reworked in front of the original, partially erasing the projection of the towers. The communes, adjoining the house, house houses, a barn and a barn, extended by agricultural buildings in return for square. These elements reflect a typical rural organization, where the manor house served as both a seigneurial residence and a farm centre. The facades and roofs of the house have been protected since 1993 as historical monuments.
The building thus embodies the evolution of the noble houses of the Landes, moving from a defensive function to a more agricultural and residential role. Its inscription in the heritage underscores its architectural and historical interest, reflecting successive adaptations to local needs. The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as an emblematic monument of the heritage of Lot-et-Garonne, open to the visit in the framework of the regional tourism.
