Origin and history

The church Saint-André de Belleu is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Belleu, in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France). Its construction took place in three distinct phases: the oldest part dates back to the 12th century, while the north side was added to the 16th century. Most of the current building, however, dates back to the 19th century, reflecting major architectural changes.

The plan of the church follows a basilical structure, characteristic of medieval churches, with a central nave and low side. Its stone-built bell tower with eight sections is considered relatively rare for the region. This architectural detail, combined with its centuries-old history, led to its classification as historical monuments by decree of 25 March 1920. The building today belongs to the municipality of Belleu.

Saint Andrew's Church is part of a broader historical context where parish churches played a central role in community life. In the Middle Ages, these buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, marking the social and religious rhythms of the local population. In Aisne, a region marked by a strong agricultural and artisanal presence, churches like Belleu were often symbols of stability and continuity throughout the centuries.
