Origin and history

La Bergerie ronde de Goualade is a former sheepfold located in the Gironde department, New Aquitaine. Built at the end of the 18th century or at the beginning of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its initially circular shape, modified later to adopt a horse iron structure. This change took place after the afforestation of the Landes and the disappearance of the large sheep herds, leading to its conversion into stables, stables and wagon sheds. It is the only known representative of this type of building in France, suggesting a possible influence of the pilgrims of Compostela, where similar constructions exist.

The building, inscribed in the historic monuments by order of 13 October 1992, has an exterior wall in blind bellows and an interior frame in wooden poles on stone blocks. The frame farms, radiating around a central point in the courtyard, define thirteen spans covered with hollow tiles. The sheepfold thus illustrates a rural architecture adapted to the pastoral needs of the time, before the transformations associated with the evolution of agricultural and forestry practices.

Located in the east-northeast of the village of Goualade, along the departmental road D10, the sheepfold is now owned by a private company. Its current status and use (visit, rental, etc.) are not specified in available sources. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair, with an approximate address at 35 Cap de Bos. This monument bears witness to a rare rural architectural heritage, linked to pastoral history and cultural exchanges in Aquitaine.
