Origin and history

The Oratory of the Ames-du-Purgatory of La Chalpe is a religious monument located in the commune of Bessans, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This type of building, often modest and isolated, traditionally served as a place of prayer and recollection for local populations, especially in mountainous areas where climatic and geographical conditions strongly influenced daily life.
