Origin and history
Hotel Berard de Montalet is a historic monument located in Bessan, in the Hérault region of Occitanie. Built at the end of the 18th century, it rests on the foundations of an ancient medieval residence. This building illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, with a regular basalt façade of Agde and a monumental stone staircase.
The main house, rectangular, houses remarkable interior decorations: woodwork, gypseries and high-quality ironwork. A courtyard separates the house body from the commons, while a garden in the east houses a well. The building also preserves medieval carved beams, testimonies of its ancient origin.
The hotel belonged to the family of Bérard de Montalet, a local noble family. Joined historic monuments in 2005, it reflects the prestige of the 18th century provincial elites, mixing medieval heritage and classical influences. Its basalt, typical of the Agde region, and its ironworks highlight the Languedoc artisanal know-how of the time.
