Origin and history
Reinach Park is a historic monument located in Hirtzbach, Upper Rhine (Great East). Created in the 1st quarter of the 19th century, it is a landscaped park in English, designed in 1820 by Baron Charles de Reinach-Hirtzbach. The latter included about 50 species of trees and shrubs, as well as architectural elements such as a cottage, shed, shelter and a cooler, the only vestige of this type preserved in the Sundgau.
The park is located on Rue du Château, in the heart of Hirtzbach, and its right-of-way also includes its fence wall. It was registered as historical monuments by order of 5 September 1996, thus protecting all its components, both plant and built. The official coordinates place it near Main Street, confirming its anchoring in the local fabric.
The Reinach Park illustrates the influence of English landscaped gardens in France at the beginning of the 19th century, a period marked by a craze for natural spaces in the aristocracy. Its sponsor, Charles de Reinach-Hirtzbach, embodies this trend by combining romantic aesthetics and functionality, with elements such as the cooler, reflecting the practical needs of the era.
Today, the park remains a testimony of this green and architectural heritage, open to discovery. Its listing among historic monuments highlights its heritage value, both for its development and for the remains it preserves, such as the cooler, rare in the Sundgau area.
