Origin and history
The monumental cross of Mount Dahin is an emblematic work located in the commune of Amont-et-Effreney, Haute-Saône, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. His artistic style suggests an achievement in the 16th century, a period marked by an important production of monumental crosses in Europe. It is distinguished by its column adorned with six characters in relief: a crucified Christ, a very degraded Virgin with the Child at the back, and four saints placed under a baldaquin tent. Of these saints, two are bishops recognizable to their mitre, while the other two, identified as St.Peter and St.Paul, are represented with their traditional attributes, a key and a sword, carved on flowered caps.
The precise location of the cross is indicated as being on Mount Dahin, at approximately 5117 Le Montdahin, in the commune of Amont-et-Effreney. The monument was classified as historic monuments by an order of 9 January 1986, thereby recognizing its heritage and artistic value. The cross, with its sculptural details, reflects the religious and artistic traditions of the region in modern times, while serving as a material witness to local devotion.
The structure of the cross, including Christ and the saints, as well as its height, suggests that it could play both a spiritual and a visual role in the landscape, perhaps marking a place of pilgrimage or a landmark for the inhabitants. The materials and style of sculpture, although not detailed in the sources, are characteristic of Renaissance religious works in Franche-Comté, where sacred art occupied a central place in community life. Ranking as a historic monument ensures its preservation and enhancement for future generations.
