Origin and history

Varzay Train Station is a railway station built in 1912 in the commune of Varzay, Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. It is part of the line from Saintes to Royan and belongs to a series of six identical stations built between 1909 and 1912 by the engineers of the State railways. Its Art Deco architecture, marked by white, red and green enamelled bricks, is characteristic of the stations of this period between Saint-Jean-d'Angély and Royan.

The passenger building, which has been decommissioned since the closure of the line, was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 August 2002. It is today a private property. Nearby, there is a technical and sanitary edicle, as well as a stone enclosure topped by an iron gate. These elements, built of limestone and bellstone, bear witness to the importance of the local railway network in the early twentieth century.

The Varzay station, designed by architect Pierre Esquié, shares its style with the stations of Asnières-la-Giraud, Douhet-Écoyeux, Pisany, Saint-Hilaire-Brizambourg and Saint-Romain-de-Benet. These buildings reflect an architectural standardization specific to the state railways, combining functionality and aesthetics for travellers of the time. Their gradual decommissioning illustrates the evolution of transport in France during the 20th century.
