Menhir (cad. AB 80): entry by order of 10 January 1974
Origin and history
The Menhir de Moëlan-sur-Mer is a megalithic monument erected during the Neolithic period, a period marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. This type of structure, typical of Brittany, probably served as a territorial landmark, place of worship or funeral marker for local communities. Menhirs, often isolated or aligned, reflect a complex social organization and technical mastery notable for the time.
Located in the Finistère, this menhir was officially recognized as a Historic Monument by a registration order in 1974. Its location, although documented (11 Route de Kerascoet, 29350 Moëlan-sur-Mer), remains approximate according to available sources, with a location accuracy considered "passable". This monument illustrates the importance of the prehistoric Breton heritage, which is still partly mysterious because of the lack of contemporary written sources.
Available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, confirm its protected status and its membership in the municipality of Moëlan-sur-Mer, identified by the Insee code 29150. No additional information on its precise use or detailed archaeological context is provided in the sources consulted. The Creative Commons license associated with his photo suggests visual accessibility of the monument, although the terms of the visit are not specified.
