Cheminée sarrazine with its mitre : inscription by order of 30 April 1925
Origin and history
The Barn des Carrons is a building located in the commune of Saint-Cyr-sur-Menthon, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, listed as historical monuments in 1925, is distinguished in particular by its sarrazine fireplace, an architectural element typical of certain French regions, which was specifically protected by this decree.
Barns of this type, frequent in rural areas such as Bresse, traditionally served as a storage place for crops and agricultural tools. They played a central role in the economic organization of villages, where agriculture was the dominant activity. The sarrazine fireplace, often associated with old buildings, reflects local construction techniques and adaptation to the heating or ventilation needs of large interior spaces.
The Carron barn, with its inscription as historical monuments, bears witness to the heritage importance attached to these utility buildings, which illustrate the way of life and know-how of the rural communities of Ain and Bresse throughout the centuries. Its state of conservation and official recognition make it a representative example of this rural architectural heritage.
