Origin and history

The fortifications of Briançon are a major historical monument located in the Hautes-Alpes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built between the last quarter of the seventeenth century and the first quarter of the eighteenth century, they are part of the defensive network designed by Vauban to secure the borders of the kingdom of France. Their architecture reflects the military innovations of the time, adapted to alpine mountain terrain.

Classified Historic Monument by decree of 11 December 1979, these fortifications include protected elements such as ramparts and bastions, identified in the cadastre under references AO 5, 53 to 55, and 58 to 60. Marquis Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, a renowned military engineer, is the master of the project. Today, these works belong to the municipality of Briançon and testify to the strategic importance of the city in modern times.
