Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin d'Arces, classified as a Historic Monument in 1911, has its origins at least in the eleventh century. Ceded in 1086 at the abbey of Saint-Étienne de Vaux, it was rebuilt in the 12th century, period of which its three-sided Romanesque apse remains. This original vestige was preserved despite subsequent changes, including those of the 14th century, which saw the replacement of Romanesque apsidioles by two Gothic seigneurial chapels.
In the 17th century, important works altered the structure of the nave (from 1670), while the present façade, built in 1703, was distinguished by its broken triangular pediment door and rectangular bay, framed by massive foothills. The octagonal bell tower, surmounted by an arrow of slate, dominates the cross of the vaulted transept in cloister arch. The right side chapel houses 15th century frescoes, rediscovered in 2018 during restorations.
The 19th century marked a major decorative recast: murals and celestial vaults painted in the apse, stained glass and statuary were added, while the altarpiece of the choir was restored in 1994. Located on a promontory, the church offers panoramic views of the hills, the Gironde estuary and the coasts of the Médoc, highlighting its historic anchoring in the local landscape.
The building, owned by the commune of Arces (Charente-Maritime), illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of rural churches, mixing Romanesque heritage, Gothic transformations and modern embellishments. Its classification in 1911 attests to its heritage value, reinforced by protected elements such as medieval frescoes and liturgical furniture.
